Chinese Narrative Poetry

by Dore Jesse Levy, Chinese Narrative Poetry Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chinese Narrative Poetry books, Chinese Narrative Poetry brings a new perspective to some of China's best-loved and most influential poems, including Ts'ai Yen's "Poem of Affliction," Po Chu-yi's "Song of Everlasting Sorrow," and Wei Chuang's recently discovered "Song of the Lady of Ch'in." Composed in the shih form during the Late Han, Six Dynasties, and T'ang periods, these poems stand out as masterworks of narrative art. Yet paradoxically, their narrative qualities have been little recognized or explored in either traditional Chinese or modern Western scholarship. The reason for this neglect is that Western literary traditions acknowledge their origins in epic poetry and thus take narrative for granted, but the Chinese tradition is fundametally based on lyric and does not admit of a separate category for narrative poetry. Drawing on both classical Chinese critical works and the most recent Western contributions to the theory of narrative, Levy shows how narrative elements developed out of the lyrical conventions of shih. In doing so, she accomplishes a double purpose, guiding the modern reader to an understanding of the nature of narrative in Chinese poetry and shedding light on the ways in which Chinese poets adapted the devises of lyric to the needs of a completely different expressive mode. Students of Chinese literature will welcome this pathbreaking study, but Chinese Narrative Poetry will interest other scholars as well because it addresses questions of crucial importance for literary theory and comparative literature, particularly the central issue of the applicability of Western critical concepts to non-Western literature and culture.

by 趙廉, Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download books, This long, narrative poem in English and Chinese follows one woman's journey from China to Canada over four decades. In these pages the two languages sit side by side, mirroring each other, each telling a tale that alternates between confusion and despair and hopes and dreams. Lien Chao depicts the struggle of a generation in its persistent search for freedom and for free artistic expression. This book is a personal epic, a mixture of lyric and narrative that joins Lien Chao's Chinese past with her Canadian present and future. The intensity of its joy and pain, its two worlds caught in two languages, makes it a fascinating and unique creation. - David Helwig Lien Chao's Maples and the Stream is an intensely truthful and engaging poem that crosses back and forth the nebulous border of diasporic encounter and identity. This is a hybrid text that poses the in-between places of a translational attention and offers us concrete touchstones of history, person, and desire. The maple is surely a more palpable tree for Lien Chao's lyrical honesty. - Fred Wah

Chinese Poetic Closure

by Yang Ye, Chinese Poetic Closure Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Chinese Poetic Closure books, In this comparative study of Chinese poetic closure, Yang Ye focuses on a -scenic ending- that presents an image rather than a statement of thought, as exemplified in the poetry of High T'ang poets like Tu Fu. "Chinese Poetic Closure" places the development of poetic structure in the Chinese tradition since the ancient anthology, "The Book of Songs," and explores the underlying poetics of incompleteness and suggestiveness. In the light of the explication of Western texts (Du Bellay, Holderlin, and Shelley) and an examination of early reception of Chinese poetry in the West, Ye reflects on fundamental differences between Chinese and Western poetry and poetics."
