Having a positive attitude toward a product leads consumers to take pro-product actions, such as purchasing the product or recommending it to other consumers. Even though favorable attitudes toward the product can increase purchase intentions or other behaviors, simply establishing positive attitudes toward one's product is not enough. In part, this is because attitudes are more influential when they are strong rather than weak. Though many properties of attitudes have been identified as predictive of how strong an effect the attitudes will produce, one attitude property that has received substantial attention is attitudinal ambivalence. Because ambivalence can play an important role in determining the effects of the attitude on thinking and behavior, it is crucial to understand the factors that contribute to ambivalence. Therefore, the goal of the current research was to understand how individuals develop ambivalence in the first place. The primary thesis for this research is that the effects of social (dis)agreement on subjective ambivalence depend, in part, on the emotional reactions experienced by the perceiver and the extent to which that person is disposed to use those emotional reactions in forming perceptions of objects in his or her environment. In particular, individuals with high levels of emotional intelligence (EI) might be more sensitive to emotional information or might use their emotional reactions to a greater degree, leading to stronger relations between social (dis)agreement and subjective ambivalence and between emotional reactions to that (dis)agreement and subjective ambivalence. Study 1 was designed to test whether a respondent’s level of EI would moderate the extent to which social (dis)agreement impacts subjective ambivalence. The study provided initial evidence related to the role of EI in creating social agreement effects across a wide range of attitude objects. Study 2 extended the previous study by adding emotional reactions to the model. This study investigated the mediating role of emotional reactions in the attitude effects on subjective ambivalence. In addition, this work examined whether EI moderates the agreement effects on ambivalence by affecting the impact of agreement on the emotional reactions, by affecting the impact of emotional reactions on ambivalence, or both. EI worked as a moderator only at the second stage of the model and this back-end interaction was marginal or directionally consistent across different types of analysis. The facet of attention to one’s emotions showed stronger effects than the overall index of EI, with interactions between attention and emotional reactions consistently reaching significance. Notably, the observed interactions between emotional reactions and EI or attention to one’s emotion in predicting subjective ambivalence still held even after controlling for objective ambivalence, suggesting that personal and social factors are two distinct determinants of subjective ambivalence. The major finding of the study was the mediating role of emotional reactions between social agreement and subjective ambivalence, at least when participants showed a high level of EI (or attention to one’s emotions).

Branding is central to political campaigns and political protest movements; the alchemy of social media and self-branding creates overnight celebrities; the self-proclaimed “greening” of institutions and merchant goods is nearly universal. But while the practice of branding is typically understood as a tool of marketing, a method of attaching social meaning to a commodity as a way to make it more personally resonant with consumers, Sarah Banet-Weiser argues that in the contemporary era, brands are about culture as much as they are about economics. That, in fact, we live in a brand culture. Authentic™ maintains that branding has extended beyond a business model to become both reliant on, and reflective of, our most basic social and cultural relations. Further, these types of brand relationships have become cultural contexts for everyday living, individual identity, and personal relationships—what Banet-Weiser refers to as “brand cultures.” Distinct brand cultures, that at times overlap and compete with each other, are taken up in each chapter: the normalization of a feminized “self-brand” in social media, the brand culture of street art in urban spaces, religious brand cultures such as “New Age Spirituality” and “Prosperity Christianity,”and the culture of green branding and “shopping for change.” In a culture where graffiti artists loan their visions to both subway walls and department stores, buying a cup of “fair-trade” coffee is a political statement, and religion is mass-marketed on t-shirts, Banet-Weiser questions the distinction between what we understand as the “authentic” and branding practices. As often happens with thoughtful theoretical papers, ideas about ambivalence and the relationships between parents and their adult children have been percolating ever since. The construct takes several steps forward in this symposium-book:- The first essay by Connidis and McMullin is extending Lüscher and Pillmer's work. The authors reconceptualize the construct of ambivalence by focusing on the contradictions emerging from interactions across the generation, contradictions that are structurally created. In doing so, the draw from critical theory, allowing for human agency and emphasizing diverse family structures and processes. The authors illustrate their reconceptualization using examples from unpaid family labor.The authors argue that an ambivalence approach to intergenerational relationships is superor to a focus on solidarity, a construct developed and pursued systematically by Bengtson and his colleagues (second article). Bengtson et al. comment on Connidis and McMullin's paper, identifying what they see as problematic with teh ambivalence construct and arguing for an approach that includes both ambivalence and solidarity. From a different perspective. Curran applauds Connidis and McMullin for shifting the construct of ambivalence from the individual to the relational level, connencting social structures and human agency and linking within-family social processes to similar processes in other social arenas. Yet she criticezes them for failing o attend directly to agency and is motives. In descrbing and elaboaing the concepts of accountability and embedded relations, she further extends theorizing about ambivalence. Finaly Connidis and McMullin have the last word.
