Minimizing Wind Damage In Alternative Silviculture Systems In Boreal Mixedwoods

by S. Navratil, Minimizing Wind Damage In Alternative Silviculture Systems In Boreal Mixedwoods Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Minimizing Wind Damage In Alternative Silviculture Systems In Boreal Mixedwoods books, This report reviews the nature of wind damage in forest stands and relates that damage to the silvicultural systems used or being developed for management of boreal mixedwoods. The report gives detailed consideration to the approaches for minimizing wind damage in released white spruce understory specific to the two-stage harvesting and silvicultural system. The review addresses the individual tree stability, stand stability, and external stability factors such as site characteristics, topography, windiness of the region, and sheltering effects of adjacent stands, and relates these to a framework for recognizing high-risk sites and stands. The report also discusses principles of wind damage management in the context of designing silvicultural systems with incremental wind protection levels.

Developing Sustainable Mixedwood Practices In A Stand Level Adaptive Management Slam Framework

by G. Blake MacDonald, Developing Sustainable Mixedwood Practices In A Stand Level Adaptive Management Slam Framework Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Developing Sustainable Mixedwood Practices In A Stand Level Adaptive Management Slam Framework books, This report describes a project to advance knowledge of boreal mixedwood management by testing techniques for achieving productive mixtures of conifers & hardwoods at operational scales. The project is applying treatments in aspen-dominated boreal mixedwood stands at two sites in north-east Ontario. Contrasting approaches are being compared (blended mixtures versus mosaics, partial cutting versus herbicide application, shade-tolerant versus shade-intolerant conifer regeneration) to help identify best practices. Treatment effectiveness is to be assessed by measuring regeneration growth, vegetation succession, soil nutrient dynamics, and changes in invertebrate populations. The report includes information on the site characteristics, treatments, pre- & post-harvest measurement methods, data analysis, knowledge transfer from the project, and project challenges & prospects.
