The Network Challenge Chapter 10

by Manuel E. Sosa, The Network Challenge Chapter 10 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Network Challenge Chapter 10 books, Complex products, such as airplanes and automobiles, are designed by networks of design teams working on different components, often across organizations. The challenge in managing these networks is to decompose the project into manageable pieces but then coordinate the entire network to produce the best overall design. In this chapter, Manuel Sosa offers insights on this challenge. He examines the design structure matrix (DSM) as a project management tool for planning complex development efforts and discusses the engineering and managerial implications of considering complex products as networks of interconnected subsystems and components. In particular, he considers the impact of modularity on interactions among subcomponents. Finally, he examines organizational communications, overlaying product interfaces with communications interfaces of development teams to understand where communication links may be missing or unnecessary. The discussion offers insights on any complex design and coordination challenge, where networks of individuals or teams work together to contribute to a larger whole.

by Boaz Ganor, The Network Challenge Chapter 26 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Network Challenge Chapter 26 books, As terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda have been transformed from hierarchical organizations to more fluid networks, countering terrorism requires an understanding of networks. These networks evolve rapidly in response to actions to thwart them, leading to an ongoing struggle of terrorist and antiterrorist networks. In this chapter, Boaz Ganor examines the evolving threat of terrorist networks and network-based responses. As he notes, “it takes a network to beat a network.” He also examines direct and indirect implications for business organizations.

The Network Challenge Chapter 8

by Steven O. Kimbrough, The Network Challenge Chapter 8 Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download The Network Challenge Chapter 8 books, Artificial intelligence (AI) offers computational methodologies for modeling systems, which can be valuable in understanding networks. In this chapter, the author examines several types of applications of these methods in exploring how the behavior of individual agents leads to outcomes across networks. For example, he considers how one system, based on a Prisoner’s Dilemma that provides a higher payoff for players who don’t cooperate, can result in a surprising outcome in which cooperation dominates after many rounds of play. He also considers agent-based models--including turtles in a pond, showing discrimination effects; and sugar and spice trading, showing interactions through trading. Finally, he explores applications to ant colony optimization and swarming optimization of flocks of birds or schools of fish. He concludes that computational models offer important insights into networks, and the procedures used in modeling have a significant impact. The discussion also demonstrates that “networks matter,” affecting outcomes in sometimes unpredictable ways.

Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge Selected European Writings

by European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training, Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge Selected European Writings Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge Selected European Writings books, This volume, the second of a two-volume publication, comprises 15 papers that present the work of individual European projects dealing with learning within organizations. These five chapters in Part 1, The Meaning of the Learning Organization, examine the conceptual frameworks and dilemmas at the heart of the notion of the learning organization: "Developmental Learning--Condition for Organizational Learning" (Ellstroem); "Challenges and Open Questions Raised by the Concept of the Learning Organization" (Fischer); "How Organizations Learn--Theory of Learning and Organizational Development" (Franz); "Competing Perspectives on Workplace Learning and the Learning Organization" (Brown, Keep); and "Conundrum of the Learning Organization--Instrumental and Emancipatory Theories of Learning" (Cressey, Kelleher). These six chapters in Part 2, Organizational Learning Realities in Different Contexts, present or report on company case studies: "Social Dialogue and Organizational Learning" (Kelleher, Cressey); "Implementing Organizational Change in British Telecom" (Cressey); "Banking on Learning--Deutsche Bank Corporate University" (Reimann); "Stimulating a Thirst for Learning--Case of the Guinness Dublin Brewery" (Findlater); "Learning to Network--Transformation of a Social Research Institute" (Franz); and "Relationship Between Critical Reflection and Learning--Experiences Within Dutch Companies" (van Woerkom et al.). The first of four chapters in Part 3, Human Resource Development (HRD) in Support of Organizational Learning, gives a general overview; the next two chapters report on empirical studies; and the final chapter discusses future challenges for HRD from a European perspective. They are "Learning Organization and HRD in the Knowledge Economy" (Tomassini); "Changing Role of HRD Practitioners in Learning-Oriented Organizations" (Sambrook et al.); "Experiences of HRD Consultants in Supporting Organizational Learning" (Poell, Chivers); and "HRD in Europe--At the Crossroads" (Nyhan). Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge

by Barry Nyhan, Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Facing Up To The Learning Organization Challenge books, This first volume of a two-volume publication provides an analytical overview of main questions emerging from recent European research and development projects related to the learning organization. Chapter 1 provides context for the European learning organization challenge and presents four main messages arising from the learning organization project. Chapter 2 proposes the European social model as providing a societal value framework that can give meaning to the learning organization concept from a European perspective. Chapters 3-4 identify main points emerging from the individual papers that formed the impetus for the learning organization project and attempt to discuss the issues raised against the background of an organizational learning interpretative framework. Chapter 3 argues that building learning organizations is not so much a process of applying a theory to practice, but rather a constructivist process of building a practice based on shared meaning arrived at through a collective deliberation and sense-making process. Chapter 4 stresses the need to focus on the organization in all its complexity as a holistic and organic working and learning system. Chapter 5 argues organizations can only be sustained in a form of cooperative-competition with other organizations and institutions representing different interest groups in society. Appendixes include 155 references and Volume II chapter summaries. (YLB).

Executive Functions And Constructive Neural Networks

by John Larry Stricker, Executive Functions And Constructive Neural Networks Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Executive Functions And Constructive Neural Networks books, The present work explores how executive functions can be implemented in neural networks. Computational models such as neural networks allow researchers to develop more sophisticated conceptualizations of how executive functioning could be implemented in the brain. However, most computational models are designed only to solve a single problem rather than to solve multiple problems and integrate new and old knowledge. The problem domain for the models of the present work consists of Boolean logic expressions. These expressions easily lend themselves to implementation in neural networks while at the same time they can represent a range of problems that relate to executive functions, such as learning complementary vs. unrelated information. Network architectures and training regimes are developed that allow neural networks to solve multiple problems constructively while minimizing the impact of interference. The networks illustrate that the constructive learning of multiple problems does not require an executive controller, separate memory systems, or the constructive addition of learning resources.
